Pre-Kindergarten at Discovery Oaks Academy

Our Pre-Kindergarten program introduces children to a school routine that fosters their academic and social skills through creativity and discovery. We use a literature-based curriculum to provide a positive school experience where each child can grow and mature along with age-appropriate peers.

Our experienced teachers transform favorite children's books into wonderful worlds of learning that encompass all areas of development. Each book unit brings new opportunities to expand language and vocabulary, build math and science concepts, and establish fine and gross motor skills.

To enhance and reinforce our curriculum, students enjoy stimulating in-house visitors and special events, music class, library time, and various school-wide and classroom celebrations throughout the year.

Students will continue to use the proper terminology of the six major parts of the computer (monitor, screen, keyboard, mouse, hard drive and printer).

Students will be able to log in on the computer using their classroom password.

Students will be able to locate and access a learning game using the icons.

Students will be able to type the alphabet using the keyboard.

Students will be introduced to printing a document.

Students will be able to properly handle and insert a disk.

The main focus of the music curriculum is to introduce basic music concepts through singing, moving, listening, and playing instruments. Students will gradually develop their singing voices, a repertoire of songs, and a sense of rhythm beginning with the steady beat and continuing toward complex rhythms.

Through these experiences students will have the opportunity to apply and demonstrate an understanding of music concepts. These goals are presented in age-appropriate levels.

Discovery Oaks Academy’s Foreign Language Curriculum includes an introduction to Spanish, French, German and Italian. All children are taught language development as well as the geographical location of where these languages are spoken.

The program introduces the children to basic language skills, including greetings (such as “hello” and “goodbye”), numbers, colors, family members, school vocabulary and holidays. Vocabulary is reinforced each day through play and learning.

Children will also be introduced to various cultures of the countries where the languages are spoken. This includes holidays, food, dress, traditions, songs and games throughout the year.
